Three important ways to stay organized and take ownership of your health

Updated: May 26, 2023

Medication adherence is so important for maintaining good health. Taking medications as prescribed can improve symptoms, prevent complications, and even save lives. However, medication non-adherence is a common problem, with studies estimating that up to half of all medications are not taken as prescribed.

Staying organized helps to ensure medications are taken timely and accurately. Staying adherent and taking ones medications when and how they are intended to be taken can sometimes be a challenging task.

Keep a Personal Health Record

Things that help are keeping accurate records such as a Personal Health Battle Binder. I have included a link to a few that I have put together for your convenience.

Pill Box/organizers

One of the most effective ways to improve medication adherence is by using a bill box or medication organizer. Here are a few reasons why you want a bill box/organizer:

  1. It helps you remember to take your medications: A bill box/organizer can help you stay on track with your medications by providing a visual reminder of what medications you need to take and when. You can set up a system to remind you when it’s time to take your medications or refill your prescriptions.

  2. It reduces the risk of medication errors: A bill box/organizer can help you keep track of which medications you have already taken and which ones you still need to take. This can help reduce the risk of accidentally taking too much or too little of a medication.

  3. It simplifies medication management: Keeping track of multiple medications can be overwhelming, especially if you have a complex medication regimen. A bill box/organizer can simplify medication management by providing an organized system for storing and dispensing your medications.

  4. It saves time: A bill box/organizer can save you time by eliminating the need to sort through multiple medication bottles and packages every time you need to take a medication. This can be especially helpful if you have mobility or dexterity issues.

  5. It reduces medication waste: A bill box/organizer can help you keep track of your medication supply and avoid running out of medications. This can help reduce the amount of medication waste and save you money on refills.

Overall, a bill box/organizer can be a valuable tool for improving medication adherence and simplifying medication management. Speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to determine the best type of bill box/organizer for your individual needs. Whether you choose a simple weekly pill organizer or a more complex electronic medication dispenser, a bill box/organizer can help you stay on top of your health and achieve better medication adherence.

Organizing Medication Cabinets

Medication cabinets are often disorganized and cluttered. Not only can this make it difficult to find the medication you need, but it can also lead to medication errors and waste. Here are a few tips on how to organize your medication cabinet:

  1. Start by emptying the entire cabinet: Before you begin organizing, remove all of the medications from your cabinet and lay them out on a table or countertop. This will give you a clear view of what you have and help you identify any expired or unused medications.

  2. Sort medications by type: Once you have all of your medications laid out, sort them by type, such as prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements, and first aid items. This will make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

  3. Check expiration dates: As you sort through your medications, check the expiration dates and dispose of any that are expired. Expired medications can be ineffective or even harmful, so it's important to get rid of them.

  4. Organize medications by frequency of use: Once you have sorted your medications, organize them within each category by frequency of use. Keep the medications that you use most often at eye level or within easy reach, and store less frequently used medications on higher or lower shelves.

  5. Use storage containers: Consider using storage containers to keep medications organized and separate from other items in your cabinet. You can use small baskets or bins to group medications by type, or use a pill organizer to keep daily medications in one place.

  6. Keep medication information handy: It's important to have information about your medications readily available in case of an emergency or to share with your healthcare provider. Keep a list of your medications, dosages, and prescribing information in a visible and easily accessible location.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your medication cabinet organized and make it easier to find the medications you need when you need them. As a pharmacist, I always recommend reviewing your medication cabinet periodically to check for expired or unused medications, and to make any necessary adjustments to your organization system. A well-organized medication cabinet can help you stay on top of your health and avoid medication errors.
