I am a Pharmacist. I am passionate about the important role that pharmacists play in the healthcare industry and the need for us to be included in the vital decision making table discussions.
Pharmacists are often the unsung heroes of the healthcare team, but often they are the first to be overlooked. Over the years, while working with many healthcare workers in various disciplines of medicine it evident that we all look at things from a slightly different angle. Pharmacists bring a unique perspective and ability to assess that is often different than other disciplines within medicine.
Key reasons why Pharmacists should be included in critical Healthcare Discussions and Decision Making. They are a vital part of any healthcare team.
Pharmacists are a critical part of the healthcare team is our expertise in medication therapy.
Pharmacists have their Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. They are one of the most highly educated and trained yet so many times under utilized. Pharmacists are experts in the safe and effective use of medications and have a deep understanding of how drugs work, their side effects, and their potential interactions with other medications. This expertise is invaluable in ensuring that patients receive the best possible care and that their medications are working effectively to treat their conditions.
Pharmacist help to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs
Another reason why pharmacists deserve a seat at the table is our ability to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Pharmacists can help to identify and resolve medication-related problems, such as patient adherence, drug interactions, side effects, and medication errors. This not only improves patient outcomes, but it also saves time and resources, reducing the burden on the healthcare system as a whole.
By including pharmacists in decision-making processes and discussions about patient care, we can improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Pharmacists play an active role in patient education and counseling
In addition to our expertise in medication therapy, pharmacists also play an important role in patient education and counseling. Pharmacists can provide patients with important information about their medications, including how to take them, what to expect, and how to manage any side effects. This information is crucial in helping patients to understand their medications and to feel more confident and empowered in their care.
Pharmacists bring valuable knowledge to the discussions
Despite our critical role in the healthcare team, pharmacists are often excluded from decision-making processes and from discussions about patient care. This exclusion is a disservice to patients and a waste of the valuable knowledge and expertise that pharmacists bring to the table.
The solution is to utilize Pharmacists to the top of their license
In healthcare we often talk about utilizing healthcare professionals to the top of their license. This means that have each discipline help to address the overall complexity of providing care. Save Pharmacists to perform and do things that for example other disciplines can't rather than having them do a task that others can do.
Pharmacists are a critical part of the healthcare team. Our expertise in medication therapy, our ability to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs, and our role in patient education and counseling, pharmacists can make a real difference in the lives of patients and in the overall healthcare system.
